macOS Tahoe Clipboard History: How It Works and Its Limits
macOS Tahoe (macOS 26) adds clipboard history to Spotlight. Press ⌘Space, then ⌘4 to see what you copied recently. Since macOS 26.1 you can keep items for 30 minutes, 8 hours or 7 days and clear the history in System Settings → Spotlight. It has no pinning, no folders and no sync to other devices, so anything older than 7 days is gone.
- Open it with ⌘Space, then ⌘4. The first time, macOS asks you to turn it on.
- Retention: 30 minutes, 8 hours or 7 days (options added in macOS 26.1).
- No pinning, no organization, and no sync to iPhone or iPad.
How to open clipboard history in macOS Tahoe
- Press ⌘Space to open Spotlight.
- Press ⌘4 to show clipboard history.
- The first time, confirm that you want to turn it on.
- Choose an item to copy it, then paste with ⌘V.
How long it keeps items, and how to clear it
macOS 26.1 added settings in System Settings → Spotlight:
- Keep clipboard items for 30 minutes, 8 hours or 7 days.
- Clear Clipboard History removes everything at once.
- You can turn clipboard results off entirely if you'd rather not keep a history.
What Tahoe’s clipboard history can’t do
- Nothing lasts longer than 7 days. There's no way to pin a clip you use every week.
- No organization. Everything is one list: no folders, boards or favorites.
- No sync. The history stays on that Mac and doesn't appear on your iPhone or iPad.
- No per-clip protection. You can clear or turn off the history, but you can't lock individual sensitive items.
For quick “what did I copy an hour ago” moments, it's genuinely useful. For clips you reuse, or research you collect over weeks, you'll want a clipboard manager.
